The Office of Information Technology is pleased to introduce the addition of a new Virtual Desktop Console to MyApps! Your favorite MyApps applications are now consolidated into a single VDI.

The Virtual Desktop will work on any Operating System; including your laptop, desktop, tablet or phone. This VDI is preconfigured to work with UTSA resources and software, meaning you don’t need to configure your computer to get your work done.

What is a Virtual Desktop (VDI)?

A virtual desktop is just that – it is a computer desktop interface you can login to using the internet, but all of the programs, resources etc. are being streamed from and hosted by a remote computer.

Can I save files to the VDI?

Unfortunately, no personal files will be saved in the VDI. When you log off, all data is erased completely. We recommend uploading files to OneDrive, emailing them to yourself, or installing the VMware Client which alllows you to save files directly to your computer. Scroll down for more information about installing the VMware client.

How does it work?

UTSA's VDI will work on any operating system, meaning you can use your most important apps on any device you own. All you need is internet connectivity from on-campus, off-campus, or really, anywhere. This VDI is preconfigured to work with UTSA resources and software, meaning you don’t need to configure your computer to get your work done.

How do I access it?

You can quickly access the VDI using your web browser by following the link above. This version is best for quick access from any web-enabled device. For advanced graphics acceleration and access to your files on your personal devices, we recommend installing the VMware client below.




VMware Client Install



This option installs a program onto your computer that allows you full access to the environment and supports features such as h.264 graphics acceleration and connection of flash drives and local storage from your device into the VDI. This is best for frequent or heavy use of the VDI.

For best performance and full integration with your local computer (storage mapping, local printer mapping etc) you will want to have the client installed. When you select Install VMware Client, you leave UTSA’s webpages and are directed to the vendor VMware to get a client specific for your operating system. Locate the version you need and download it…then install it.
